Ok, people like that MN rep need to get something straight: just because our government is discussing the threat of "homegrown" terrorism, specifically from Muslims who could be turned to Islamic-extremism, due to intelligence that suggests it may be the new strategy of terrorist organizations overseas does not condemn every American Muslim like that firefighter that died in 9/11 to be labeled as a terrorist suspect.
That is such a bullshit argument, and using his death as some sob story counter example has NOTHING to do with the credible issue. There are at least a couple dozen examples since 9/11 of terrorist plans by people of Islamic belief living within our country that were either thwarted or successfully executed (ie. military guy that shot a bunch of soldiers due to influence from an Islamic cleric). My guess is that number is only going to rise. So why shouldn't it be a topic open for discussion? That's all it is right now, a discussion.
Members of the Islamic community are saying this is prejudice based on religion. It would be, if every Muslim American was taken in for questioning as a terrorist suspect. Otherwise, if you are following the laws of this country and not plotting to carry out an attack against it due to influence of overseas terrorist groups, then you really have nothing to worry about do you? Go on about your business. Meanwhile, the government needs to make sure you don't get accidentally caught in a bombing by one of your fellow Islamic brothers in faith, which happens to be the fate of that firefighter that you used as an example.
They say that the same attention should be paid to people of other religions if theirs comes under scrutiny. Well unfortunately for you, there aren't currently any significant Christian, Jewish, or Buddhist extremist groups causing nearly as much problems in the world as there are Islamic extremist groups... not since the crusades anyway. Maybe you need to be more of an activist against some of your misguided religious members that are actually acting against the beliefs of your religion, but claim to be acting in the interests of them.
Freedom of religion is great, and a founding belief of this country. That is and should be upheld. Freedom to act against this country, however, based on religious influence happens to not be included in those rights.
