Steve and I bought 19in Trinitrons in December of 2000 from a large internet company ATACOM.com. Last weekend I turned on my computer to find that the monitor was all blurry (thought I forgot to put my contacts in). After moving it to another computer with the same results I called Sony on Monday. After a very friendly tech helped me fill out a over the phone warranty questioner, the tech informs me that it might not be covered because ATACOM might sell reconditioned monitors. I assured him that I received both monitors from UPS in factory sealed boxes and that ATACOM does not sell any reconditioned goods. He said I could fax in a copy of my receipt for review and then he would cross-ship me a new monitor (assuming everything checked out with the receipt)
I write a nice cover letter explaining the situation (and the fact that about 90% of all electronics in my home are Sony) and fax it with a copy of the reciept to Sony. I hear nothing back so I called Tuesday. The tech I talked to says good thing you called there was a problem with your credit card (for cross-shipping reasons). Turns out the first tech took the number down wrong. This guy corrects it and tells me the new monitor will be shipped within 72hours. I am happy
Today I get an email saying they are still waiting for the copy of my receipt and that the warranty order has been suspended... I just faxed the letter and receipt again. I have a feeling I am going to get denied on this whole exchange Then I will end up writing 5 fucking letters to all sorts of Sony departments before I finanlly get it replaced...... Sounds like another fun customer support exchange. I purchased my 19 inch 3-4 years ago. It was a cheap generic but you couldn't beat the 300 dollar tag at the time. If it broke I would be screwed because I don't even think it is labeled. I wouldn't even know who to call

Yeah, my first thought was to buy another one or go for a generic 21in. Then I remembered that Sony is pretty good about replacements - or so I have heard. I love the monitor - Trinitron is the only way to go in my opinion. But to be honest this will be the third Trinitron to go out between Steve and I. Bad quality control I guess.

Sony does make nice monitors. I have heard that KDS monitors use Sony picture tubes in theirs and are a little more reasonably priced. Sometimes when buying generic you luck out they just suck...

From my experience at Micron, monitors are probably the most likely component to fail and usually outside the warranty period. I replaced them by the hundreds both shadow mask and appeture grill (Trinitron). Sony, Phillips, Viewsonic - doesn't matter, they all fail eventually.
